We recently received an encouraging success story from ministry partner New World Christian School in Ecuador! In a report to Cross International, 16-year-old Mateo Vaca explained that his life used to be full of problems, “Poverty broke my house and I had to go to work to help my family with food and expenses.” Because of his work schedule, Mateo was going to have to drop out of school — but that’s when he found out about New World Christian School. Staff members from the school visited him at home and offered him the opportunity to continue his education at night, free of charge, so he didn’t have to choose between helping his family or getting an education.
And when Mateo started attending school, his future began looking brighter. “In my thoughts I had so much bitterness, hatred and contempt. But day after day, hearing the Word of God, I felt touched. It made me think, ‘God knows how to do things.’” Not long after beginning night classes, Mateo gave his life to the Lord, “That day I changed my life and God was waiting with open arms,” he recalled. It was his second chance at life!
“I’m very happy because I have the strength and love of Christ. I have the opportunity to study now… and I will get a decent job and improve my condition,” a hopeful Mateo said.
This is what makes New World Christian School so special. These teens are given the opportunity to study, but they are also introduced to abundant life in Jesus Christ! Reading Mateo’s story reminded me that even in the most hopeless of situations, the love of Christ can transform anyone into a new creation. Like 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
