Edah is happy to have been rescued from homelessness and sent back to school thanks to the gifts of compassionate Christians on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

You’d never know it by looking at her now, but not so long ago Edah and her family were in dire straits. Her father died, leaving her mother and two older brothers with no income. Her mom did not know enough about her rights as a widow, and the family’s house and property in the Zambian countryside were unscrupulously seized. They were homeless as well as penniless. Edah and her siblings had to drop out of school because they couldn’t afford the required supplies. Her mom sought work in the city and found a fellowship of believers there with whom to worship. Through that fellowship Edah and her family were rescued from a seemingly desperate situation. One of the church members was able to give Edah a job cleaning his shop. And through Grace Ministries, the outreach arm of that Zambian church—with funds provided by Cross International—the church was able to help Edah and her siblings go back to school. That’s the wonderful workings of the worldwide body of Christ. Because Christians in America joined hands with Christians in Zambia, a poor widow’s children have hope and a future!

Hope and Healing Doubled

When I first saw the “before” photos of Marco Antonio and Marco Tulio, I couldn’t believe my eyes.  I’d seen many cute photos from parents celebrating their twins.  This seemed like a nightmarish mirror image of that happy experience.

The twin boys had similar agonized expressions, protruding bones and weak limbs. Their skin was stretched tightly over their thin faces and taut, hungry stomachs. Clearly, they were both about to die of malnutrition.

Mother and twins are happy, healthy and full of God’s love!

Mother and twins are happy, healthy and full of God’s love!

Fortunately, these suffering boys, I learned, had become wards of missionary Carlos Vargas. He operates an emergency nutrition center in a rural mountain area of Guatemala where poor families live in squalor and children often suffer from malnutrition. When he saw the level of need in the area years ago, he immediately began a ministry to help the suffering people.

When I eventually saw the “after” photos of Marco Antonio and Marco Tulio, I was as stunned as I had been by the “before” image. Their faces were bright and healthy! Their bodies were full of life! It was a miracle only God could accomplish, and I believe he did it through his disciples on earth like Carlos and friends like you. In this case, I saw hope and God’s healing power — doubled!

Good News to the Poor (Luke 4:18)

In Jubilee – a dry and barren slum on the outskirts of Gonaives, Haiti – children are reading God’s Word in their native Creole language and learning about Jesus’ love for them, thanks to the efforts of Cross International partner MUCH Ministries. Together, we are transforming this desolate slum into a place of prosperity and hope!

A Heart Change

These men and their families have been rescued from hopelessness by Kaibigan Ministry.

These men and their families have been rescued from hopelessness by Kaibigan Ministry.

You’d never guess these men – well-groomed and fervently worshipping God together at a meeting of Cross International ministry partners in the Philippines – had once been homeless. You’d never guess some had spent their whole lives on the streets, begging and picking pockets. But now here they were, standing before us as living examples of how God can take the worst circumstances and turn them upside down.

These men and their families have been rescued from hopelessness by Kaibigan Ministry, a Cross-supported outreach that provides temporary shelter to street-dwellers, teaches them employable skills and reintegrates them into society, all while helping them develop a personal relationship with Christ.

Here’s a powerful testimony by a former street-dweller named John Rollo:

When I was still out in the streets, I stole food from grocery stores. I ate some and sold the rest. I used to hurt others. Fellow street-dwellers feared me… Then I met Kaibigan Ministry and became a Christian, not because I searched for God but because God never gave up on me. I took courage and surrendered all my transgressions to God. I cried because of sins I had committed that were bigger than myself. Christ changed my attitude toward others and showed me that I, too, was capable of loving.

Kaibigan gave me a job that now provides for my daily needs. God gave me a beautiful wife and a comfortable home. Before, I did not know how to read. Through the Bible studies I can now memorize verses.

John’s life is a perfect example of what we mean when we say we’re in the business of giving a “hand-up,” not a hand-out, to the poor. Our goal is to transform lives – physically, mentally and spiritually.

A generous man…

Recent studies reveal that as many as 300,000 Haitian children suffer from chronic malnutrition, and up to half of child deaths in the country are caused by starvation. Cross International is addressing the immediate needs of poor children across Haiti by providing vitamin- and nutrient-rich food. But we couldn’t do it without the help of our faithful supporters. May God bless you for your heartfelt compassion! “A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.” Proverbs 22:9

New Homes, New Lives

Thanks to Cross International supporters, Jacqueline Pierre and her three children now have a safe, new home with a sturdy roof and plenty of space.

Thanks to Cross International supporters, Jacqueline Pierre and her three children now have a safe, new home with a sturdy roof and plenty of space.

“People used to make fun of me because I couldn’t provide for my family,” said Jacqueline Pierre, a single mother of three living in the impoverished community of Jubilee, Haiti.

Jubilee is a squatter’s settlement on the outskirts of Gonaives, one of the poorest cities in the poorest countries of the Western Hemisphere. The desolate landscape resembles a moonscape, lacking vegetation because it’s built atop salt flats. The salty soil chokes the crops, which means most of the community is severely malnourished. The majority of Jubilee’s 15,000 residents are also unemployed and live in dilapidated shanties made of nothing more than flimsy sticks, crumbling rock and dried mud.

“My old house was very small and the roof leaked,” Jacqueline said of her previous, one-room shelter. “It was very hot inside.”

Jacqueline used to earn a meager income as a market vendor, but always found it hard to provide her children with the food, education and medical care they needed.

“I had nothing, I was always depressed,” she said.

But thankfully, Jacqueline’s life has dramatically improved after receiving her brand-new, Cross-supplied home. The new house is a safe and comfortable place where she can raise her children among Christian neighbors.

“We can sleep better here and now I have respect in the community,” she said. “My spirit is happy and that has made my children happy.”

Thanks to our generous supporters, Cross was able to fund the construction of 50 new homes for families like the Pierre’s through our mission partners MUCH Ministries. Together, we are building a community of hope in one of Haiti’s most destitute areas.

May God bless you for your heartfelt gift to the poorest of the poor—you are changing lives in Jubilee!

School for the Deaf Construction Progress

Thanks to compassionate Christians through Cross, construction on the second story of the School for the Deaf has begun.

Thanks to compassionate Christians through Cross, construction on the second story of the School for the Deaf has begun.

Last week I was traveling throughout Haiti, visiting our Cross International mission partners in Gonaives—a large, coastal city in the north of the country with a history of voodoo, social unrest and oppressive poverty.  I was particularly excited to catch up with Pastor Genada Juinato and his wife Rosa, who have been lovingly ministering to the poor there for 15 years at the Filipino Baptist Mission.

Pastor Genada has a special place in his heart for Haiti’s deaf children, many of whom are orphans or come from desperately impoverished families. These children are often denied the opportunity to attend school, are abused and mistreated, and are shoved to the outer fringes of society. That’s why he felt called to build a specialized school and boarding house so that he can give deaf students a quality Christian education and a safe place to live, all so that they may have the opportunity to become productive members of society.

Right now the current 40 students, ages four to 18, are meeting in four classrooms.

Now more of Haiti’s deaf children can receive a quality, Christian education and valuable vocational training.

Now more of Haiti’s deaf children can receive a quality, Christian education and valuable vocational training.

Cross International is building a second story for the school, so that more of Haiti’s deaf can benefit from an education and valuable vocational training. At the school students learn how to read, write and sign, as well as technical skills like carpentry, masonry, sewing, baking and construction. Their time in the classroom is also helping them develop their Christian faith and fellowship with one another.

“The Lord has blessed us through Cross to get a new school,” Pastor Genada said. “We’ve been praying for three years for this and Cross came through. God is faithful. Whenever we need something, he’s always provided.”

Thank you to our generous supporters who are making it possible for the least of these in Haiti to earn a life-transforming education!

Helping Haitians Help Themselves

These hand-made journals are providing a source of income for poor Haitian families.

These hand-made journals are providing a source of income for poor Haitian families.

In a show of support for MUCH Ministries’ self-help program for poor families in Jubilee, Haiti, Cross ordered a shipment of 5,000 journals from their trade school, where local Haitians have been learning to make various items by hand so they can earn a small income. The ministry responded with this email:

Dear Cross,

I wish for a moment you could see what I see here.

I wish you could see the look on the faces of these people that are full of HOPE…

These women want to work. They love paying off their debts, having good meals for their kids, paying for their children’s school themselves without begging! They literally are getting their feet underneath them…and it is a family affair. Though I never see them, apparently the husbands are helping them get the work done each week! Family businesses!

The order for journals has propelled one young man and his team of 12 into a new workshop. (Desperately needed!) Benson is a 22-year-old student who leads the team of journal makers. He will graduate from Bible Seminary in January. He is slow to speak, intelligent, exudes peace and joy, and I have often found he and his coworkers worshiping the Lord during their lunch break!

He also believes that God is doing something amazing in Jubilee. Making His Name known in this place! …When this order for 5,000 journals came through, he knew he had to get it done… There is a growing belief that God is indeed restoring this land to its rightful owner – God himself – the One who truly cares for these people!

I cannot thank you enough for purchasing goods from the people here. This addresses the issues of poverty that are far more than monetary. Past relief, and into development. Leaving the crippling effects of Voodoo and learning to walk in the kingdom of God.

New Creations

Through Christ-centered community transformation and Bible studies, Cross is helping Gawad Kalinga change the lives of thousands of Filipinos from the inside out.

Through Christ-centered community transformation and Bible studies, Cross is helping Gawad Kalinga change the lives of thousands of Filipinos from the inside out.

“My whole life has changed,” says 18-year-old John Michael Montilla, one of thousands of Filipinos benefiting from Cross International’s support of Gawad Kalinga, a ministry that revitalizes old, impoverished slums into new, Christ-centered communities. We help replace shacks made of tin and wood scraps with beautiful, concrete homes; clean up polluted streets; and turn a slum culture rife with gangs and violence into a community defined by fellowship and peace. The renovated neighborhoods also offer everything from free medical care to education to Bible studies—things previously unavailable in the slums.

“This is a group of people with a burning passion and love for God,” John Michael says. “This group has helped me become more faithful to God and thankful for the gifts he has given me.”

He also says he has finally met new, true friends—friends who never let him down and who are there for him in times of need. This is a big change from the gang culture that dominated his old neighborhood.

“My life has meaning now,” says John Michael. “This program strengthens my spiritual life, the career sessions develop my self-confidence, and the tutorial sessions are helping me improve my studies and reach my dreams.”

Stories like John Michael’s—of incredible physical and spiritual transformation—remind me of 2 Corinthians 5:1: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

What joy we as Christians have in this promise—that Christ takes us out of our sin and squalor and changes our lives with his love and light. At Cross, we know that this level of dramatic transformation only occurs when Christ is at the center. That’s why we support projects like Gawad Kalinga in the Philippines, who share our commitment to provide long-lasting, holistic change for the poor.

Praise God that the lives of Filipinos like John Michael are being changed from the inside out!

An Offering of Love

A Family receiving a food-kit during a home visit

A Family receiving a food-kit during a home visit

A simple plastic bag filled with food. It’s something I take home from the grocery store each week without really thinking about it. While I’m by no means rich and don’t buy extravagant grocery items, I’ve never had to worry about whether I have enough money to buy the food I need.

For the deathly ill single mother and her two children pictured here, however, having enough food was never a guarantee—until our ministry partner Reencontro stepped in.

In Mozambique where Reencontro ministers to orphans and single mothers, food insecurity wreaks havoc both mentally and physically on thousands of families. Children are malnourished; mothers never know if they’ll have enough resources to buy food; entire families go to sleep at night with empty stomachs.

For these members of God’s kingdom, the plastic bag filled with food that they receive from Reencontro each month is anything but simple. It’s a life-line. And it’s all possible because caring Christians like you helped us provide it.

I like to think of these bags of food as humble gifts from one Christian in America to a fellow believer in Mozambique. I imagine Cross and Reencontro as the hands transferring that gift from America across the world to Africa and into the family’s reed hut. It’s not gift-wrapped, but it’s wrapped in love.

It’s quite a picture, one that illustrates how a plastic bag of food can become so much more than what it seems. When you think of it that way, it becomes an offering of love made in the name of Jesus. And that, we know, is one of the most beautiful offerings of all.
